Runkeler Laach

Nature Reserve

Nature reserves constitute one of the most important conservation categories in Germany and Austria. The exact definitions vary, but together they combine the conservation of natural landscape, the protection of endangered species and the preservation for scientific interests.

Die „Runkeler Laach“ umfasst einen langgestreckten, felsigen und waldbestandenen Talhang am südlichen Ufer der Lahn, welcher in den höheren Lagen in ein Plateau mit Acker- und Grünlandflächen übergeht. Das Naturschutzgebiet zeichnet sich durch eine große Vielfalt an Tier- und Pflanzenarten aus, die erhalten bleiben soll. Besonders schützenswert ist der naturnahe Eichen- Hainbuchenwald des Talhanges der sich im Frühjahr in ein farbenfrohes Meer aus Frühblühern mit teilweise seltenen Arten verwandelt. Der Wald und auch die Waldrandbereiche sind zudem von besonderer Bedeutung als Lebensraum für eine Vielzahl teils bedrohter Vogelarten.
