The purpose of protection is to preserve the former sand pit with its wet, seasonally wet and dry areas as a habitat and partial habitat for rare and endangered plant and animal species, whereit plays a supra-regional role as a stepping stone for migratory birds. The area is also to be protected for scientific reasons.
