The Schaalelauf nature reserve protects the natural course of the Schaale river, its floodplains, and wet forests. It serves as a refuge for rare plant and animal species tied to this dynamic flowing water ecosystem.
The Schaalelauf nature reserve preserves a natural section of the Schaale river in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This area is characterized by the dynamic processes of a near-natural flowing water system, which shape a variety of habitats. It encompasses extensive floodplain landscapes with wet meadows, reed beds, and natural riparian forests that support a high level of biodiversity. This riverine landscape is home to numerous specialized plant species, including rare orchids and marsh plants. The varied structures also support a rich array of wildlife: characteristic fish species like the European bitterling, amphibians such as the moor frog, and various dragonfly and bird species find favorable conditions here. The purpose of protection focuses on maintaining the characteristic flowing water dynamics and the associated rare animal and plant populations, along with their habitats. The natural development of this unique ecosystem is paramount.
