Schafwiesen

Nature Reserve

Description & Map

The Schafwiesen nature reserve is located in the municipality of Römerberg (Palatinate) in the Rhine-Palatinate district of Rhineland-Palatinate and extends southeast of Mechtersheim directly on the Rhine. The approximately 29-hectare area, which was designated a nature reserve in 1989, is characterized by a species-rich riparian forest interspersed with numerous standing waters, gullies, reed beds, and hay meadows. The purpose of the reserve is to preserve these diverse habitats, which provide a home for rare and endangered animal and plant communities. In addition, the area serves as an important link between other floodplain areas in the region that are worthy of protection.
