Schanzenberge bei Mankmoos protects unique dry habitats vital for rare flora and fauna in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Established in 1998, its open character is maintained to preserve these important pioneer environments. Public access is not permitted.
The Schanzenberge bei Mankmoos nature reserve, located near Mankmoos in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, safeguards valuable dry habitats. Established in 1998, its primary purpose is the care and development of these unique environments, which are crucial for specialized plant and animal species adapted to dry conditions. Historically, the area benefited from sheep grazing, which helped maintain its open landscape. Following the cessation of grazing, efforts are now made to manage vegetation through mowing to ensure the preservation of its distinctive open character and prevent the loss of important pioneer habitats. While ecologically significant, the reserve is part of an active gravel pit operation, and therefore public access is not permitted, ensuring the protection of its sensitive ecosystems.
