Schönwolder Moor is a significant nature reserve within the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve, dedicated to preserving one of West Mecklenburg's last and best-preserved domed ombrotrophic raised bogs. This unique habitat is largely undisturbed by human activity, showcasing a characteristic zonation from alder-birch swamp forests to central treeless bog areas. The moor is home to distinct plant communities, including peat moss and cotton grass societies, and rich in bog plants like cranberries, bog bilberries, crowberries, sundew, and bog rosemary. Furthermore, Schönwolder Moor holds important faunistic value as a breeding ground for cranes. Its preservation is crucial for maintaining this rare and characteristic bog type.
