The Selmsdorfer Traveufer nature reserve safeguards a unique natural landscape along the Lower Trave. Its primary purpose is the preservation of a distinctive steep bank, rising up to 15 meters above the river. This area is a mosaic of habitats, including open, unwooded slopes, dense bushes, and diverse forest sections. Additionally, the protection extends to valuable adjacent springs and fens, which contribute to the rich biodiversity. Historically, the area's secluded location at the former inner-German border played a significant role in its exceptional preservation.
