Tarnewitzer Huk is an artificial peninsula showing 50 years of natural succession. It protects valuable habitats as a Natura 2000 site and serves as a research area. Access is restricted.
Tarnewitzer Huk is a unique, artificially formed peninsula in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, separating Boltenhagener Bucht from Wohlenberger Wiek. This special area impressively demonstrates how nature can develop undisturbed over 50 years – a fascinating example of natural succession. Serving as a research object for 'process protection,' Tarnewitzer Huk makes significant contributions to understanding uninfluenced natural development. It is also designated as a Natura 2000 Habitats Directive site (FFH-Gebiet) and a European Bird Protection Area, underlining its importance for the conservation of rare habitats and bird species. To protect these valuable natural processes and due to historical contamination, access to the entire area is permanently closed.
