The Teichgebiet Wismar-Kluß is a significant wetland landscape in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, shaped by the historic Wallensteingraben and a system of fish ponds. This area developed from post-glacial kettle holes and was historically dammed for water mills and aquaculture, a tradition that continued until the 1990s. Today, it serves as a nationally important breeding and molting ground for numerous marsh and water bird species. Its diverse habitats include extensive reed beds, home to the Bittern, Marsh Harrier, and various warblers like the Sedge Warbler and Savi's Warbler. The rarely seen Spotted Crake also finds refuge here, alongside Bearded Reedlings and Penduline Tits. A breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles can be observed near the pond shores, and fallen trees provide perching spots for Kingfishers. During autumn migration, the area attracts large numbers of resting birds such as Shovelers, Pochards, Lapwings, and Golden Plovers, highlighting its crucial role in regional biodiversity.
