The Thürer Wiesen near Thür are a nature reserve and an important resting place for migrating ducks and geese.
The Thürer Wiesen near the Pellenz municipality of Thür is a nature reserve that serves in particular as an important resting place for ducks and geese on their biannual migration to their breeding and wintering grounds. Newcomers such as the Egyptian goose and great white egret also use the area as a feeding ground all year round. Water birds such as great crested grebes and curlews also find suitable living conditions here. With a bit of luck, the colourful kingfisher can even be seen hunting. The open landscapes with hedges and overgrown field margins provide a habitat for species such as yellowhammer and turtle dove, both of which depend on these structures. The marsh harrier also needs both habitat types and can be found here, as can the protected red kite, which nests in forests and copses and hunts for prey in the fields. Its main distribution area worldwide is mainly in a strip from Rhineland-Palatinate to Brandenburg, which makes it a true native. In addition to these species, you may also encounter hunting pheasants and the typical forest dwellers fox and deer.
