The former clay pit, from which clay was transported to the Lahn valley via a cable car and processed into roof tiles, has been a nature reserve since 1990. The Koblenz-Schmidtenhöhe military training area is located nearby. The conservation purpose is to preserve and develop the area with its water areas, shallow water zones and wetlands as a habitat for rare and endangered animal and plant species as well as for scientific reasons.
