The purpose of protecting this area is to preserve and develop an ecologically valuable landscape feature on the edge of the Selz lowlands. This area is characterised by embankments, dry stone walls, piles of stones, and areas of stone rubble and gravel interspersed with fallow land and vineyards. These areas are covered with dry scrub and other woody vegetation and are home to heat- and drought-loving grassland communities. These serve as habitats and partial habitats as well as refuges and stepping stone biotopes for typical and rare plant and animal species that are threatened with extinction. The protected area is part of a networked biotope system that encompasses the Selz catchment area.
