The Wakenitzniederung nature reserve safeguards a significant section of the boggy Wakenitz river valley. This diverse landscape is characterized by its extensive peat cuttings, remnants of historical land use, and the distinctive Herrnburg inland dune. The combination of these features creates a rich mosaic of habitats. The primary purpose of protection is to preserve this unique environment, which serves as a crucial refuge for a wide array of endangered animal and plant species. The varied conditions within the boggy valley, peat areas, and dune support a complex ecosystem, contributing significantly to biodiversity in the region. This area also forms part of the larger FFH-Gebiet 'Herrnburger Binnendüne und Duvennester Moor' and a small southern portion lies within the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve, highlighting its broader ecological importance.
