The nature reserve is divided into birch swamp forest and fenced heath areas. In the center of the area is a small area of moorland in a good state of preservation. The Wunderburger Moor is not far from the village of Harpstedt and was once used by many Harpstedt residents as a peat bog. Apart from a view over a heath area at the end of a public path, the nature reserve is not easily accessible to the public.

According to the Federal Nature Conservation Act, a nature reserve is a legally designated area in which special protection of nature and landscape is required for the conservation or restoration of ecosystems, for scientific reasons or because of their rarity, uniqueness or beauty. Actions that could lead to changes or even damage to the nature reserve are prohibited.
