Description

The Zehlendorfer Moor nature reserve is located within the picturesque Recknitz Valley, nestled between the villages of Zehlendorf and Recknitz in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Established in 1972, this area is dedicated to preserving a distinctive moorland landscape, an increasingly rare and valuable habitat. It is naturally divided into two sections by the Zehlendorfer Damm. The primary objective of its protection is to maintain and, where necessary, restore the unique ecological functions of this moor. These habitats are crucial for a variety of specialized plant species adapted to wet, nutrient-poor conditions, as well as for numerous insect species, amphibians, and birds that depend on these specific environments. Protecting the Zehlendorfer Moor ensures the continued existence of this culturally and naturally significant wetland ecosystem, contributing to the region's biodiversity.
